Missions
First Reformed Church is committed to global outreach and will continue to inform and encourage the congregation to be involved in supporting missionaries and participating in outreach projects at home and abroad. Our commitment to missions is demonstrated by our budget. The mission program accounts for 18% of the budget monies. This money provides support for fourteen overseas missionaries, three serving in the United States and eight local mission interests. Our annual Thanksgiving offering supports many special projects at home and overseas.
The people of First Reformed Church are involved with their missionaries. Short term mission trip teams have repaired houses on the Mississippi River, remodeled a garage into a mission house for InterServe, built houses and garages on the West Side of Grand Rapids, remodeled a RCA church in California, and upgraded homes and churches on the Mescalero and Omaha Indian reservations. We have traveled overseas to support our missionaries. Teams from First Reformed Church have built houses in Ecuador for MAF, welded railings and gates to keep children safe in a Jamaican orphanage, helped build Young Life camps in the Dominican Republic and Costa Rica, worked on an orphanage in Haiti for World Mission, and taught English in the Czech Republic for TEAM. Short-term mission trips provide life-changing experiences and keep us connected with our missionaries.
We support many ministries on the West Side of Grand Rapids including Servants Community Church, The Other Way, Open Hearts Community Church, West Town Jubilee, and Clancy Street Ministries. These ministries provide jobs, cars, food, shelter, and the goods news of Jesus Christ for people in this area.
First Reformed Church has many opportunities for outreach but we continue to search for new and creative ways to share the gospel in our neighborhood and around the world.
Missions Council
Directs the church in who to support on the mission field and takes an active role in helping the church see and understand how God is moving in far away places. The Mission Council is responsible for:
• the support of missionaries
• determines financial commitments
• provides opportunities for mission experiences
• keeps the church up-to-date on the missionaries we support
• oversees the Mission Endowment fund
• helps foster the understanding that all people have been called to be missionaries in the places they live.
